What Drives Modern Feminism.
August 9, 2009 by LadyLogic
I find it pertinent to assert why modern feminism is still so essential. It’s still falsely being deemed “unnecessary, illogical and evil” by Psychology Today’s article. With the recent gym shooting that killed three women and wounded nine (including a pregnant woman), I can easily reason that women are still being subjugated and targeted. The shooter had a deep seated hatred of women’s sexual nature which was twisted further by his loneliness and desperation. The shooter, George Sodini, eerily shows his true feelings towards women on his blog:
“It seems many teenage girls have sex frequently. One 16 year old does it usually three times a day with her boyfriend. So, err, after a month of that, this little [expletive] has had more sex than ME in my LIFE, and I am 48. One more reason.”
The Psychology Today’s article emphasized how feminism is the “radical notion that women are men” but that statement is completely false! Feminism is defined as the belief in the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes. It’s actually insulting and fundamentally unfeminist to tell women to be men in order to find fulfillment and happiness in their lives, are they not already fully capable? And yes, it’s a radical and unrealistic concept too.
The reason feminism still exists is because there are still problems: negative, detrimental and unjust actions toward women based on their gender and sexuality. Bob Herbert, in his article about the gym shooting, states women’s current state of equality in the world today:
“The shock [of abuse towards women] wears off quickly in an environment in which the rape, murder and humiliation of females is not only a staple of the news, but an important cornerstone of the nation’s entertainment.”
It’s an amazing article which ties several related situations that bring forth intense, undeniable evidence that proves how badly women are treated solely for being female. The reality of it truly is difficult to stomach.

I believe you are making a hasty generalization about the gym shooter. This individual’s feelings alone do not represent males or society at large. He obviously has DEEP self-esteem issues seeing as how he is a 45 year-old adult who feels threatened by a 16 year-old child. His resentment towards them is thinly veiled envy. So by that I feel like it’s his personal struggle plus his own creepiness and is not representative of how a typical male views females. The worst members of any population are not part of the norm.
Hello Craig!
Thank you for clarifying that this extremist is not a valid representation of men in general, but he is an prime example of misogyny taken to the next level. Obviously, it is impossible to judge how all men view women because they are individuals and anything from location to age to experience to nationality can influence their perceptions of gender.
It’s just that with so much going on in the media, ( Sotomayor, the whole ESPN reporter Erin Andrews video ordeal and the female Sudanese journalist facing 40 lashes for simply wearing pants) it isn’t hard to see how sexism is still extremely damaging in modern times.
